I originally wrote this on 10/17/2002. Hey, that’s somebody’s birthday! Anyway, this is from when my wife and I were long-distance dating, and is a fairly typical look at one of those Toronto trips.

Another fun weekend with my friend Sherri.

If you haven’t been keeping track, Sherri visited me in Florida during the Labor Day holiday. This time it was my turn to pop by Toronto for the weekend. I flew in on Friday evening and cabbed it over to her neighbourhood (via downtown, unfortunately). We visited with this guy she knows, Ed, and then strolled over to the “good” grocery store — the one that has fresh fish — so we could buy needed ingredients for a delicious shrimp pasta recipe I know. Oh, don’t forget a quick stop at the LCBO for a bottle of wine. We enjoyed dinner (the pasta went over so-so, but the chocolate cake for dessert was fab) and didn’t go out due to the shitty weather. Oh, and I think Sherri has a new bracelet now.

Saturday we didn’t make it out of bed ’til around noon or so. The power was out for about 2 1/2 hours, so there was no cooking, no TV, no radio… but I didn’t mind so much. Once the power came back on I fried up some turkey bacon, Sherri scrambled a few eggs, and we got ready to go out. We went to Eaton Centre to do some shopping for me and meet up with her friends Chris and Shannon from Florida. I wasn’t in much of a shopping mood, so we made plans to meet up her friends later for dinner. We walked up Yonge up to Bloor (I think…), and then over to the The Keg (the Mansion one) for dinner w/Chris and Shannon. Damn good steak, wine, and company. I’ve mentioned this before, but there are few things I appreciate more than a great meal with interesting and entertaining people, so I had a lot of fun. After dinner Sherri and I were full, tired, and a little tipsy, so we called it an evening and cabbed it back to the apartment.

The first few hours of Sunday are unaccounted for… I think it was Pre-Traumatic Stress Disorder. See, Sherri bought a new ceiling fan, from the fine people at Hunter Fans. They might make a decent ceiling fan (I can’t say for sure… I couldn’t get the fan to actually WORK), but they can’t write an installation manual to save their farking lives. Worst. Manual. EVER. So that consumed several hours, resulting in a blown fuse and my monthly quota of profanities. Anyway, what better way to relax than to take in a movie? We saw Sweet Home Alabama, the predictable feel-good movie of Fall 2002. After that a quick trip to the grocery to buy new fuses for some reason (cough), and then out for sushi for dinner.

Monday started out with the potential for trouble, but I somehow managed to dodge it. A storm came through the night before, and some freak winds did damage around town. Here’s an article about it. “The road to Terminal 3 remains closed this morning and traffic is being diverted after high winds almost blew over an under-construction bridge atop the main access road to the terminal.” Ok, a bit sensational and not entirely accurate, but it makes for good reading, doesn’t it? The traffic was snarled around the airport, but my kickass cab driver and his knowledge of roads near the airport kept us out of trouble. Toronto in October, week 2, in a few weeks, when Leah and I are meeting up there to hang out. Should be good for some more material, that’s for sure.

See? Wasn’t that fun?
