WWII photo

Written By: brian - Sep• 02•08

I was scanning a bunch of family photos tonight for posting on Geni and came across this one.

Joseph Moulton Snyder and crew
(click on it for the larger version)

Joseph Moulton Snyder is rear row, third from the left. He was my great uncle through my father’s mother.

There’s a lot of information on the back that I didn’t want to go to waste. Besides, maybe someone else out there is searching for information on these people. You never know…

Photo dated: 1942
Name of plane: “The Chief”
Crew: 15-5-15

Front row, left to right:
1. William R. Baxendale — co-pilot — St. Louis, Mo. “Bill”
2. Archie F. Bower — pilot — Harrisburg, Pa. “Duke”
3. Richard W. Cooke — bombardier — Buffalo, N.Y. “Dick”
4. Lee E. Hoskins — navigator — Hamilton, Ohio.

Rear row, left to right:
1. Jessie J. Hirschberg — ast. radioman — Brooklyn, N.Y. “Hirsch”
2. John J. Waskovich — tail gunner — Harrisburg, Pa. “Wask”
3. Joseph M. Snyder — ast. eng. “Joe”
4. John J. Popowitz — radioman — New Kingston, Pa. “Pop”
5. Frank S. Giondano — engineer — Brooklyn, N.Y. “Grando”
6. Wesley W. Schneider — ball gunner — Chicago, Ill. “Wes”

Update: Found this link today. The photo is the same as the one in my possession, and there’s details about the crew being shot down over Bavaria (near Berchtesgaden).
