Why I abandoned Firefox 2

Written By: brian - Mar• 26•08

I’ve been forced to abandon Firefox 2.

Around the time they released Firefox 2.0.0.12, I noticed my Bookmarks Toolbar (the toolbar below the Navigation Toolbar) was blank.

Normally, it would look more like:

(Without all that Flock-specific stuff on the lefthand side, of course)

The strange thing was, this happened on all three PCs:  home desktop (Windows), work laptop (Windows), and work desktop (MacOS Leopard).  This seems to rule out any OS or PC specific cause, so I blame Firefox 2.0.0.12.  Unfortunately, NOBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD has experienced this problem, it seems.  Since I consider those bookmarks critical, off I went in search of another browser.

I found Flock, and I haven’t looked back.  Flock, built on the same engine as Firefox (Mozilla), is billed as “the browser for people who like to be connected”.  As such, it features integration into many popular social networking type sites, including Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, YouTube, and others.  There’s an OK-ish RSS feed reader built-in, though the developers seem to have made a huge oversight in not including a way to hide entries marked as read.  There’s a built-in blog entry editor (which I’m using to write this).  And most importantly, it shows my bookmarks toolbar.

Firefox 3 betas were also an option, since they correctly show the Bookmarks Toolbar, but so far I’m exceedingly happy with my Flocking experience.
