Short week update

Written By: brian - Nov• 20•07

I feel like it’s been dark, rainy, and cold for weeks, even though it’s only been four days. Tomorrow’s supposed to be a little better, with a forecast of only dark and rainy, without the cold. So there’s that.

Stopped by McDonald’s today for the first time since… well… the last time. For some reason they got my order right, so I might start treating myself to McD’s breakfast every few weeks. Hooray for sausage & egg biscuit combo breakfast value combo meal breakfast. I’m loving it. Really.

We’re enjoying the Amazing Race 12 so far this season. I don’t hate any of the teams (yet), and they’ve been to interesting places. Sherri liked the donkey “hee-haw” from episode 1, and I thought it was cool that they had to either teach English or learn <I forget the name of the language> in a small village in Nowheresville, Burkina Fasso. It’s probably as close as I’ll get to understanding what Joshua is experiencing, and even then it’s probably waaaaay off.

The Writers Guild strike will start to have a larger effect on my life, as last week’s The Office and 30 Rock were the last ones stockpiled. I’m in no ways upset, though, as I believe in what they’re doing. How can someone like NBC Universal post a complete episode of a show to their web site, and then say it’s only for promotional purposes (so they don’t have to pay residuals to the writers)? BS, especially considering they’re selling ads. I hope this is a wake-up call to a lot of content creators out there… that there are other methods of distribution besides broadcast television. They should also ask themselves: “Which is better: 1% of a large pie, or 50% of a small one?”

You may have noticed I switched out the commenting system on some of my posts. It’s a drop-in system called Intense Debate that I’m testing. There are a few hiccups, but I hope to work through them. My ideal would be to put ID on all posts, but the old comments don’t seem to be importing correctly, so at this point it’s only enabled for posts that had 0 comments prior to last week. It’s a little more of a pain to comment now, mainly because you need to create or log in to an account, but there are more pros than cons to having the system. Some of the pros include threaded conversation, reputation, cross-blog profiles, and optional email notification when one of your comments is replied to. Nice stuff.
