The House: Occupation day +1

Written By: brian - Dec• 20•05

Yesterday was the move. Yesterday was a long day.

All our stuff is at the new house now, from the apartment and the storage unit. We used to be able to park in the garage but that was short-lived. Now it is free self-storage.

I spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening, and this morning, feeling like an intruder in my own house. Yes, all my stuff is familiar, but its all out of context. Why is all my stuff in this strange place?

No patterns have been laid down yet. Where do we stack the bills to pay? Where am I hanging my key? Where should I keep my laptop bag? I need some time to establish some routines but it doesn’t appear there’ll be time before I leave for Christmas/New Year.

Then there’s the matter of all the furniture. The master bedroom is pretty big (19×11.5) but the windows are in the wrong damn places. It’s making it tough to arrange the bed and TV in a workable configuration. We have a stopgap solution in place but the setup needs optimization. Same story for the living room. No obvious way to arrange the furniture. The TV and the fireplace are right next to each other, so it’s clear that’s the way the furniture needs to face, but it just doesn’t quite work. Don’t know what the fix there is, either. We’ll trial-and-error some configurations and see what sticks.

Upcoming projects:

  1. Install closet shelf system in MBR (4-5 hrs)

  2. Paint pantry shelves (1.5 hrs)
  3. Replace leaking copper pipe leading to utility sink in basement (4 hrs)
    • Nice to have: install shutoff valve that cuts off only laundry water
  4. Replace power outlets and faceplates
  5. Replace mailbox
