5 blades?!

Written By: brian - Dec• 18•06

In my entire life, I’ve been blessed with a clean shave maybe, oh, 8 times. The other 3400 times it hasn’t been close enough, or I end up with knicks (nicks?), a weird neck rash, patchiness, etc. My skin simply doesn’t want to be shaved, and fights back with a vengeance.

The quality of shave I receive from my electric has been declining lately. And then, a sign! A 56 blade razor showed up in the mail, unsolicited, a few weeks ago. Well, I say 56 blades, but it’s really 45+1… 45 in the front, and 1 on the back that I can’t quite figure out how somebody would use. But there’s 56, dammit!

I gave it a whirl after not shaving for a few days because of fear of burn from my electric. I still had a travel-size shaving cream bottle kicking around for some reason, so I lathered up and went to town. And it was good. I’ve shaved twice since then and it’s still going well, so I’m hopeful for the future. It takes a little more time vs. an electric, and I can’t watch TV while I’m doing it, but I’ve read some places that shaving with a blade takes a small layer of skin off in the process, which is supposed to be healthy.

I’m not sold on the 45+1 blade razor… I still think it’s overkill, especially since I’m not even using 1 of the blades. Why should I pay for that blade? Maybe I’ll have a look at the grocery and see if there’s a more reasonable razor to be had.

Try the Gillette Fusion. Five blades on the front (plus the one on the back I use to even up my sideburns). It’s a damn fine shave … and close! Even though it was spoofed on The Onion long before it was even developed, it really does give a great shave.

That’s the one I’m using! I stand corrected… it’s FIVE blades on the front, one on the back. I didn’t think about using the blade on the back to trim up sideburns, either…

Great. Did you get the vibrating or the non-vibrating model? There’s just something about using a five-bladed (plus one on the back) vibrating disposable razor that seems to capture the very essence of what it is to be American…

How does a vibrating razor help? I do everything within my power not to vibrate or twitch while I’m shaving.

OK, boys, I have got a product for you! An amazing shave gel (so I’m told — maybe I should try it on my legs!). Pure, safe & beneficial stuff, made from botanicals & with no animal products or testing. Brian will get to try it soon & can then do a Consumer Reports for us!
