I managed to see Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan on Friday. Not bad. Not 4 out of 4 stars, but I’d give it a solid 3 out of 4, for sure. I went in to it afraid I’d seen all the best parts already on the Internet or in commercials. And I had, except for one scene that is too graphic to show on TV, even if edited down.
These days I’m not a fan of the theater “experience”, by which I mean driving somewhere, paying $9.50 per person, another $20 for popcorn and coke, then watching 15-20 minutes of commercials. One movie for two people is the same price as a month of Netflix! Plus, the popcorn is cheap at my place, I can sprawl on the couch, pause at my leisure, and fast-forward through the previews. However, for a comedy like Borat, I felt it was important to see it in a crowd.
It’s encouraging to me that the movie topped the box office for the second week in a row. Studio heads, pay attention! Risks are rewarded! Instead of churning out sequel after sequel, let the creative filmmakers have their turn.
